How Much Local History Do You Know?

Englishtown, New Jersey, holds a storied past that traces back to 1688 when James Johnston, an Englishman, first owned property in the area. The town was named after the English family, who settled here before 1730, acquiring a large tract of fertile land that helped shape the community’s early agricultural character.

Englishtown played a notable role during the Revolutionary War, particularly during the Battle of Monmouth on June 28, 1778. It is believed that Englishtown served as a strategic crossing point for Colonial troops under the command of General George Washington. Local lore recounts that following the battle, General Washington and his officers were hosted by Moses Laird at his home, where they were treated to a special meal prepared by Laird’s wife and daughters. This home, which initially functioned as a two-room tavern before the revolution, stands today as the Hulse Memorial Home on Main Street. Furthermore, in 1777, one of Monmouth County’s main thoroughfares ran from Monmouth Court House (now Freehold) through Englishtown to Middlesex County, establishing the town as a vital trading hub for the region.

The Village Inn, one of Englishtown’s oldest buildings originally built between 1728 and 1732 as a tailor shop, later became a tavern in 1766. Active through the 1960s and preserved by the Battleground Historical Society in 1978, the Inn now serves as a focal point for community and historical activities. It hosts Revolutionary and Civil War re-enactors, serves as a venue for local historical groups, and houses a remarkable collection of local artifacts, making it a vibrant center of cultural and historical life in Englishtown.
